Methodology Overview

Netzerra implements IPCC 2006 Guidelines updated with AR6 (2021) GWP₁₀₀ values. Calculations follow the GHG Protocol Scope 1/2/3 framework aligned with ISO 14064-1:2018.

Kenya Grid EF — Verified March 2026: Kenya's grid is ~90% renewable (geothermal 44%, hydro 23%, wind 16%). Correct EF: 0.070 kgCO₂e/kWh (IEA 2024 / SEforAll Kenya). A figure of 0.497 kgCO₂e/kWh was previously incorrect and has been corrected across all Scope 2 calculations.
Emissions (tCO₂e) = Σ [Activity Data × Emission Factor × GWP₁₀₀] ÷ 1000
AR6 GWP₁₀₀(CH₄) = 27.0, GWP₁₀₀(N₂O) = 273 — GHG Protocol Aug 2024 / IPCC AR6 WG1 Ch.7
AR5 GWP₁₀₀(CH₄) = 28, GWP₁₀₀(N₂O) = 265 — UNFCCC Paris Agreement standard

Borehole Methodology

Scope 1: diesel (drilling + pumping + generator). Scope 2: KPLC grid × (1 − solar%). Scope 3: casing materials amortised over design lifetime.

S1 = (L_drill/lifetime + L_pump + L_gen) × 2.68
S2 = kWh × 0.070 × (1 − solar%) [Kenya grid, IEA 2024]
S3 = (kg_steel×1850 + kg_PVC×2410 + kg_cement×830) / lifetime / 1000
Total [tCO₂e/yr] = (S1 + S2 + S3) / 1000

Livestock Methodology

IPCC 2006 Vol.4 Ch.10 Tier 1 — Eastern Africa defaults. Enteric CH₄ + manure CH₄ + pasture N₂O. GWP values are dynamically applied from the active GWP set (AR6 default).

E_enteric = Σ(heads × EF_ent) × GWP_CH4 [AR6: 27.0 | AR5: 28]
E_manure_CH4 = Σ(heads × EF_man_CH4) × GWP_CH4
E_manure_N2O = Σ(heads × Nex × EF3 × 44/28) × GWP_N2O [AR6: 273 | AR5: 265]
EF3 = 0.02 pasture (IPCC 2006 Vol.4 Table 11.1)
Total [tCO₂e/yr] = (E_ent + E_man + E_n2o + E_feed + E_elec) / 1000
📋 Uncertainty: ±30% enteric CH₄, ±50% manure N₂O (IPCC 2006 Vol.4 Table 1.4). Tier 1 values. For Tier 2 accuracy, use country-specific EFs from direct measurement.

Transport Methodology

DEFRA/BEIS 2023 fuel-based method. Refrigerant fugitives classified as Scope 3 — use active GWP set.

E_fuel = Σ(L_fuel × EF_fuel) / 1000 [diesel 2.68, petrol 2.31 — IPCC 2006 Vol.2]
E_HFC = kg_HFC134a × GWP_HFC134a [AR6: 1,530 | AR5: 1,300 — GHG Protocol Aug 2024]
E_R404 = kg_R404A × GWP_R404A [AR6: 4,180 | AR5: 3,922]
Total [tCO₂e/yr] = (E_fuel + E_HFC + E_R404) / 1000
⚠️ Note: HFC-134a GWP changed significantly between assessment reports. AR4=1,430, AR5=1,300, AR6=1,530. The GWP selector above controls which value is applied.

Construction Methodology

Scope 3 embodied carbon (Bath ICE v3.0 cradle-to-gate) typically dominates construction projects. Leakage from land clearing is added to the total if a land type is selected.

Scope 3 = t_cement×830 + m³_conc×159 + t_steel×1850 + t_rebar×1990 + ... [Bath ICE v3.0]
Scope 1 = (L_excav + L_gen) × months × 2.68 + truck_km × 0.20 [IPCC 2006 / DEFRA 2023]
Scope 2 = kWh/mo × months × 0.070 [IEA 2024 — Kenya grid]
Leakage = hectares × tCO₂e/ha [IPCC 2006 Vol.4 Table 4.7 — Eastern Africa land cover]
Total = Scope1 + Scope2 + Scope3 + Leakage
📋 Uncertainty: ±20% steel, ±15% concrete, ±10% cement (Bath ICE v3.0 standard deviations). For KNCR Level 2 accuracy, use contractor-verified material quantities.

Manufacturing Methodology

IPCC 2006 Vol.3. Emission intensity benchmarked against KTDA, IFC, FAO, World Steel sector references. CBAM-ready output for EU export compliance.

Scope 1 = L_diesel×2.68 + L_HFO×3.17 + kg_LPG×2.98 + t_CO2×1000 [IPCC 2006 Vol.2]
Scope 2 = (kWh_grid − kWh_solar) × 0.070 [IEA 2024 — Kenya grid]
Scope 3 = kg_HFC134a×GWP_HFC + kg_R404A×GWP_R404 + m³_ww×25 + t_waste×580
Intensity = Total_kgCO₂e ÷ tonnes_output [kgCO₂e/t product]

Netzerra Score Formula

The NTZ Score (0–100) rewards intensity reduction, active offsetting, year-on-year improvement, and engagement. Aligned with SBTi 1.5°C pathway (7% annual reduction).

Intensity_Score = 40 × max(0, 1 − E_intensity / sector_benchmark)
Offset_Score = 30 × min(1, total_offsets / total_emissions)
Reduction_Score = 20 × max(0, ΔE_reduction / 0.07)
Engagement_Score = 10 × min(1, projects_tracked / 10)

ℹ️ About Netzerra & The Founder

Kenya's carbon economy needs a data layer. Netzerra is that layer — built from the ground up, for Kenya, by one person who saw the problem firsthand.

The Story Behind Netzerra

Netzerra started as a single question during my industrial attachment at the Kenya Water Industry Association (KWIA) in 2023: "How much carbon does drilling a borehole actually emit?"

I watched drilling rigs burn diesel for days. Steel casings shipped hundreds of kilometres. Cement grout packed into every hole. No one was measuring any of it. I built a small spreadsheet — then a bigger one.

The late Mr. Tom Armstrong, then Chairman of KWIA, became my first mentor. He saw what I was doing and pushed me to think bigger — beyond boreholes, to every sector of Kenya's economy. His passing left a profound gap, and a profound responsibility to see this through.

Three years later, that spreadsheet is Netzerra — covering five sectors, 47 counties, KNCR-native architecture, and the only platform in Kenya that automates Community Development Agreements under the Carbon Markets Regulations 2024. Built by one person, in Kenya, for Kenya.

🌍 Our Mission

Give Kenya's farmers, county governments, and businesses the tools to measure, understand, and reduce their carbon footprint — without needing a PhD in climate science. By combining IPCC AR6 methodology with Kenya-calibrated factors, we provide auditable data that meets international carbon market standards.

🎯 Why Netzerra?

Kenya's KNCR launched February 2026. 80+ concept notes filed — zero with proper MRV documentation. Every project risks KES 500M in penalties for false data. Netzerra is the compliance automation layer: from emission calculation to CDA generation to KNCR submission, all in one platform.
